Rafael Nadal Australian Open 2009

I know you all loved the pink shirt at the French (until it became the shirt of death). But then came the bizarre checked boxers this fall and now this monstrosity, reportedly Rafael Nadal’s outfit for the 2010 Australian Open (via FortyDeuce):

*My eyes!*

Seriously, what is this mess? Tangerine and fuchsia with coordinating diagonal plaid? The warm up looks fine, but it’s almost impossible to f-up a hoodie.

Between this mess and Roger’s horrendous waiter on safari outfit at Wimbledon, I’m starting to wonder if 1. Nike thinks “tennis” is Brit-speak for “circus” 2. designs are created with the aid of a Twister wheel (“I got my left hand on ‘Michael Jackson’ and my right foot on ‘figure skater’”) or 3. down economy means fabrics from the 80s remnant pile.

But what do I know?

I think Rafael Nadal's 2010 Australian Open outfit is:

Who’s with me in saying this spells disaster? LOL

    • freakyfrites says:

It’s a disaster for my eyeballs!

      • Russian_based_tennis_girl says:

It’s a disaster fair and square!!!! And I thought Adidas designers were a freaking mess *shakes her head*

        • Disaster? More like vomit comet straight from a 70′s acid trip. Those Nike designer’s better stop droppin A while they are working and come up with some real shorts. Ughh…really awful shorts.
Feel bad for Rafa. Makes him look like Mr. Furly from Three’s A Company.

  2. dootsiez says:

Nike, we get it. Rafa = colourful. Roger = 48 shades of blue. But boy, overkill for the pair of them. Giving Rafa a soothing colour every now and then would be nice, as with giving Roger something other than blue.

The shorts, in particular, offend my retinas.

    • freakyfrites says:

I would love to see Roger in pink! Just for the shock value. Suddenly fantasizing about some mixup in Nike’s shipment, where Roger gets Rafa’s gear and Rafa get’s Rogers!

      • judy says:

i saw a pic of rog wearing pink only once and it was a practice t.
        http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/1/2/7/0/PicImg_RESTRICTIONS_APPLY_EXCLUSIVE_0a30.JPG

obviously mirka approved! well, maybe since he’s outnumbered by the gals, you’ll get your devilish wish. ;)

that would be a funny campaign, r and r switching clothes by accident… of course funnier to see rog in rafa’s outfits since rog’s are more conservative. doots would be disappointed though b/c she’s obsessing over the semi sheer white shorts that rog should be wearing to the AO. :) the brown ones up top would not do!

  3. Victori says:

The shirts would be okay with plain white shorts. The shorts and the jacket NEED WORK.

  4. Hester says:

Guys, I actually like the clothes!!!Plain will not work with Rafa and nike!!!!I like the combination of lines and colours and the dark t-shirt with light shorts and dark shorts with darker t-shirt!!!!A combination of patterns is in this year!!!!Almost everyone wears either black, white or blue (boring……) and we all know Rafa is not like everyone!!!!!I think nike did a great job to bring the new trends in Rafas’clothes. Can’t wait to see Rafa play in the clothes!!!It’s unique…….

    • freakyfrites says:

Hi Hester! Glad to hear someone likes it!

I do think the bold colors work in terms of setting Rafa apart. And he can pull it off, for sure. Perhaps it’s worse in the above photos than it will be when Rafa’s wearing it. I sure hope so!

      • Hester says:

Hi freakyfrites, I agree with you, I think it will look much better once he puts it on. At end of the day it doesn’t really matter what everybody thinks, it’s impossible to cater for everyones’ taste!!!I guess as long as Rafa is happy with it, I’m happy!!!!

  5. seda says:

Hester I’m with you. Rafa has never been one to wear drab clothing. But those pics are not exactly true to colour. His shirt isn’t tangerine it’s salmon. There are better pics that show the real colours. I even have him wearing his shirt as my gravatar.
I’m glad he’s not scared to be someone different. If the gals can have interesting & stylish clothing why can’t the men wear interesting & on Rafa sexy clothing. Except I’ll have to come & rip those sleeves off. ;-)

    • Hester says:

LOL!!!!Seda, I will help you with the sleeves!!!!Rafa, is definitely not scared to try something new. It’s the same with his tennis, he adjusts his play when he needs to!!!Seda I agree with you, I loooove some of the womens’ outfits, especially someone like Maria!!!!Very stylish and memorable!!!!

    • C.F. says:

Oh, I’m all for guys trying something new, but I must say, to me the “new” they chose for the AO is just plain ugly. It’s a matter of personal taste, of course, but I’m having a hard time trying to figure out a way in which adding these shirts to these shorts won’t look completely (and universally) freaky.

  6. rg.nadal ( ♫ Viva Espana!) says:

Those shorts are atrocious. Does he not take any interest in the designing of his clothes or is THIS the result of taking interest?

  7. shandalar says:

I’m so glad I am colourblind right now.
Still, those pants are terrible. How come “special” ou “new” turns into “ugly” ??

  8. Nina says:

OK I hate white on tennis players (except for Wimbledon where they all look gorgeous in many shades of white and since it’s tradition…) so the colours for Nadal next season seem right (imo, the shirt and hoodie). But the shorts… oh God that’s a monstrosity… bizarre. Those checked shorts of his were already painful but these take the ice on the cake… aargh. I would also like more colour for Roger if that’s possible at all. He looks specially good with red.
I think Novak is the one who had the best clothing line this season. But then almost everything looks good on Nole. ;)
Let’s pray that Tachinni keeps the good work from Adidas, I’m a bit worried though.

    • freakyfrites says:

I have liked what Tacchini has done lately on Tommy Robredo – just that classic look. It’s not super exciting, of course, but I think it will look great on Novak!

Nole looked really good in the adidas gear. Very athletic but with an edge (I think Nole brought the edge himself.) Ditto Jo-Wilfried. We’ll see how they do on Andy Murray.

My one complaint with Adidas is that they update their looks so rarely (I think Ana Ivanovic wore the same dress for about 6 months!) and they dress so many of the players in the same outfit. Usually when there’s a case of opponents dressed identically, they’re both wearing adidas.

      • Sammy says:

I liked Tommy in his outfits to. Though, seeing as he isn’t exactly mister personlity and charisma, the classic look combined with his flat state of being only made the “classic” turn to “boring”. I hope they don’t go too “classic” with Djokovic. He’s 23, it wouldn’t suit him.

I SO agree with you on the whole Adidas thing! Remember the onslaught of BLUE?! And those smurf shoes?! *shudders* It was an epidemic! I had a nightmare that ALL of the players were going to sport those shirts and sneakers (including Rafa and Fed *shrieks*) I’m dying to see what they do with Murray.

I think Adidas is a bit cheap on the new design thing. Not only are they putting Nando in hideous outfits next year (’tis the trend these days) but they don’t ever update him! He wore the same shirts throughout the whole year! He even “recycled” some of his old shirts from way back when.

  9. judy says:

ack! i don’t like this set. i don’t mind seeing rafa in bold colors and designs, but this is not so good. will detract from his adorability and famous guns and buns. ;) some of his outfits from this year were pretty good, especially the yellow and teal combo for the USO. :) it has nothing to do with the fact that i saw him up close in that outfit.

  10. Alice Marble says:

my first reaction was deep repulsion, but I forced my eyes back to the screen. Second time round I’m thinking: shirts, hoodie, even the shorts in white are all just fine. It’s those liver-colored shorts that MUST go.

But I can see it now: Rafa will rock those putrid pants!

  11. mudnessa says:

Someone like Rafa gets a hand in picking their clothes, has anyone asked him if he’s a bit color blind or something? Seriously! The pants are what really makes it over board. I get the bright colors and what not but with those pants, just no. The shirts need to be with solid muted colored pants.

    • freakyfrites says:

      Hi mudnessa!

I don’t know if Rafa really cares much about the design of his clothes. Here he is at Roland Garros, answering the questions “why are you dressed in pink?”

RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know. Yeah, same like always, why I was (in) white and yellow two weeks ago. Because it’s better than dressing (in) the same color every week, no?

      • Sammy says:

hehe, I think part of Rafa thinks we’re all crazy for caring so much about his clothes. These are two of my favorite vids of him addressing the clothes issue.

        1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu1HWN06QoE
(his initial concern about “fans didn’t like” was just too precious. Then it’s adorable how he just shrugs it off and is all like “it’s about the tennis”. <3 I admit, I was a bit heartbroken when I first saw him in sleeves, I felt…betrayed somehow… I can't explain it..)

        2- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgNVJJJDn_A&feature=player_embedded
(Jim Courier even makes him flex because accorinding to Jim "a woman told him she missed him in sleevless and missed seeing his arms" Yeah. RIGHT Jim. ;D)

But Rafa, it's all your fault you know. We care about EVERYTHING involving you. I remember he was drinking something out of a bottle during a presser and the interviewer was all "what is that you're drinking there Rafa?"

Rafa was sort of surprised at the question, he just shrugged, flashed his shy smile and said "vaneeeya milkshake" (that's Rafa speak for "vanilla milkshake") Then the whole press room broke out into giggles and he just smiled at them sweetly. I'm sure he was shaking his head from side to side internally thinking "these people are slightly loco". :D :D

Heck, they even made him explain a blister on his finger once. The interviewer sounded so concerned that Rafa patiently indulged him by giving a clear explanation on what it was and how he got it and how it wasn't so serious.

I shouldn't talk though, I'm one of those fans that freaked out about his new hair cut and sent e-mails. Yeah, Rafa, we're crazy about you. Deal with it.

  12. FeddyBear says:

    awful.

you can see here what TMF will be wearing for AO:

  13. big sis says:

    Love, love the outfit !!

  14. patzin says:

I like the shirts, hoodie, and the white shorts. Not sure about the brown shorts – I will reserve judgment until I see Rafa in them. He might fill them out nicely.

  15. lorrie says:

the shirts r ok, but those shorts…..ugggggggh. bad, bad. vamos rafa, what’s up? you’ll make the top 10 for worst dressed.

  16. Missy says:

Rafa, I flove you. You know I do. But you and your man Federer have GOT to go all postal on Nike. You bring the “guns” and Federer will bring the “french.” You two need to go all bad ass on them. But if this is truly your fault Rafa (and seeing your adorably ridiculous taste in music, I wouldn’t put it passed you) then Federer, you have to look after your kid bro and just say “no” to those shorts.

*sigh* If they’d just put Rafa in topless (or sleeveless, I’m flexible) I’d probably forgive them a teensy bit. As for Federer, GIVE THE MAN SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

I’m sure after all of this venting ( I even e-mailed Nike about this) Rafa is going to come out looking all kinds of cute and gorgeous and Federer will come out looking the way he always does and we’ll all be happy knowing that all is right in the universe.

    • freakyfrites says:

Go, Missy! If Roger and Rafa surprise us Down Under with something knew, I’ll know why!

      • Sammy says:

Hehhe, Missy, I love how you refer to Federer as “Rafa’s man” and you refer to Rafa as “Federer’s kid bro”. So cute!

Also, I commend you on your Nike-hating-with-passion. I can relate. Fingers crossed they actually LISTEN to their fans/consumers. HA!

Anywho, I suppose I’m a bit in the minority here. I just love Rafa in colors, he’s blessed with such beautiful skin and a gorgeous skin tone that colors just look THUD! on him! I’m sort of torn because I agree with your sentiments but at the same time I’ve decided to just wait and see Rafa in the outfit. He has a way of making anything look good.

As for Federer, like with regards to Rafa’s shorts (and the presense of sleeves – though no collar! So THAT’S a plus!) I’m a bit disspointed. I just feel that Nike are sort of skimping on Fed’s attire and aren’t really putting much thought and creativity into it.

I think that if Nike doesn’t make the adjutments then I’m all for Rafa and Fed switching outfits for the heck of it. Though, I think if I saw Rafa without color I’d cry. Seeing Fed IN color would make me smile!

  17. Kristin says:

I couldn’t vote on the poll because there wasn’t an “All of the above” option! I do think the outfit is Rafatastic because it’s soooo like him to wear something that nasty, but at the end of the day, he’s still a hunk.

  18. lk28 says:

I think Rafa’s outfits are meant to distract his opponents. Who can see the ball when he’s wearing those tan latticed shorts? He’ll definitely fill them out well, though.

  19. ClayBuster says:

If there’s ONE person on the entirity of Planet Earth being able to pull this off (ehm, yeah. You know what I mean ;) ), it must be Rafa!
I like the orange shirt very much. Pants… well. I guess it takes some time to get used to.
But then, I’m one of those Rafa fans who thought he looked absolutely adorable in that Pink RG shirt, and who is actually very glad that he ditched the sleeveless, so I guess I don’t really fit in with the majority. Heh. I don’t work for Nike, so don’t complain to me, LOL.

  20. Lovekosifed says:

I suppose his opponents are meant to be distracted by those eye-hurting orange-fuchsia shirt and … **GASP!**… checkered monstrosities.

Seriously, Nike–either you keep Roger boring or make Rafa look like a clown on the court. Why not throw in some curly wigs and big shoes to complete the look?

  21. LilyPop says:

AAWWWW! Sherbert Rafa! He’s sure to make me feel all refreshed and happy in the scorching heat of Australia! He’s sure to look absolutely ADORBZ in it and judging by Seda’s avatar…! <3 <3 <3

Even though I haven't been a fan of the change to sleeves, collar and buttons. And I haven't been a fan of the checkered shorts either, I can't help but feel that as long as he is healthy, happy and playing kick-ass tennis then that is all that matters.

His 2009 AO outfit was without a doubt the BEST tennis outfit of the year. It was so daring, youthful, unique and sexy…just like the man himself.

I for one prefer something new and for a little risk to be taken rather than sticking to what is safe and so tired that is should be committed to a retirement home.

What I can't wait to see (or NOT) is that group of guys (I'm sure you can all relate to this) that think they're Rafael Nadal. They ALWAYS show up to the tennis courts in Rafa's latest gear, sporting their headbands, Vamos! fist pumps, lasso forehan, and think they are charming the ladies off the court with their smiles, eyebrows and chivalry.

Isn't it so wonderful how we have such a great role model in Rafa? Whether it be for the 5 year old boys and girls or the 50-65 year old men?

I'm sure they will look just smashing in their outfits and I'm sure I will die laughing after catching a glimpse of them. :D :D :D

Bottom line, VAMOS RAFA! You're Hott and handsome and a sweetheart. Wear what you want, as long as you enjoy yourself, try your best, dazzle us with your ZOMG tennis and kick serious ass: I'm Khappy! :D

The Canadian newspaper of record, the “Globe and Mail,” linked to this post. You rock and rule, ff.

  23. Cheryl says:

I loved Rafa’s pink at the French Open and also his green & black (or very dark navy) looks awesome too!!

  24. Bryan says:

My God, looks like something you’d design on a sporting episode of Project Runway, then get eliminated for. I’ll retain what I really think until I see him wearing and moving in it.
