Two things we know without a doubt about the Spanish Davis Cup Team:

  1. They’re unbeatable at home (final score after Sunday’s dead rubber play: 5-0, Spain.)
  2. The U.N. is holding the team in a bomb shelter, in the event a nuclear apocalypse necessitates that a few choice human specimens repopulate the earth (good luck, ladies, there’s a waiting list.)

The talented and photogenic Spanish squad celebrated their 2009 Davis Cup victory over the Czech Republic at an official reception with the Spanish Prime Minister at the Moncloa presidential palace in Madrid on Monday. The team included this weekend’s heroes: Fernando Verdasco, David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez along with Tommy Robredo and Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Men in Suits!

After much consideration, I can only assume that Tommy Robredo is hiding a hickey behind that scarf:

The Spanish Armada broke in their suits at a DC cocktail party the evening before. (Dudes have it so easy when it comes to fashion!)

David Ferrer, fashion plate and DC hero – not to mention my third favorite Spanish player after Nadal and Carla Suarez Navarro - looked way cute. . .

. . .and way happy.

Rafa looks a little distracted in all of these photographs. . .

. . .maybe he was keeping an eye on his parents (or the Nicolas Massu look alike lurking in the background.)

Radek Stepanek says he’s keeping his head up:

“For us, it was a disappointing weekend,” Stepanek said. “We came here to fight for our chance to win the Davis Cup. But we have to say the Spanish team was very strong for us in front of a home crowd and on clay.”

“They had everything on their side, and we did fight with everything we had, for our pride, and we can keep our head up. We all enjoyed playing this final in front of such a crowd and the atmosphere was just amazing.” (via DavisCup.com)

Some final Davis Cup tidbits – each player’s chosen intro song for the weekend (via Sandra Harwitt at DavisCup.com):

The Spanish team:

  • Rafael Nadal asked for “Live is Life,” the biggest hit from the Austrian band Opus
  • David Ferrer rocked out to “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC
  • Fernando Verdasco selected Dixie Rock in “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon
  • Feliciano Lopez went for “Peter Pan” by El Canto Loco
  • And captain Albert Costa was apparently expecting to feel lightheaded from a victorious weekend, so he picked “Vertigo” by U2.

The Czech team:

  • Radek Stepanek walked on court to “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor
  • Tomas Berdych has edgier taste with “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns & Roses
  • Jan Hajek went to the court to face Nadal to “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay
  • Lukas Dlouhy was all about “Numb” by Linkin Park featuring Jay Z
  • And captain Jaroslav Navratil chose the darker “Streets of Philadelpia” by Bruce Springsteen.

Can’t fight the teether!

Happy Happy Boys! Well done Spain. They are a devoted team with mucho enthusiasm. Rafa was cheerleader to Daveeed on Friday. They are a close group and it provides more than just tennis skills, but motivation to play for their country. They seem like a family of sorts, don’t always agree, but in the end pull together. What a great group.

  2. Jess says:

Glad to see Rafa bites again and again.
Stepanek could hold his head up high – they have made it to the final!
    def France (*sob* poor Gillou),
    Argentina (*ahh* pico, delpo),
Croatia in the process – great achievement.

  3. Jeff Lewis says:

Ferrer is so tough! I have never seen any one come off the court after playing him look happy………………..even if they win!

  4. Melanie says:

Ferrer is the hottest guy I have ever seen. He’s even hotter than Sawyer on Lost, and that’s saying something!

  5. judy says:

congrats to the handsome spanish armada! i wasn’t able to watch since i was on a beach weekend getaway :) but i was happy to hear they won. i’m sure this makes rafa very happy, given the 2nd half of his season, with all the personal and physical challenges he’s faced. i can’t wait for them to play switzerland next spring. rog must play, esp if rafa does!
