In disappointing news for tennis fans everywhere, the London Times is reporting that Andy Roddick has withdrawn from the ATP’s year-ending championships in London next week:
The American world No.6 has withdrawn from the eight-man extravaganza – which starts on Sunday at the 02 Arena in south-east London – having been unable to overcome the knee injury that forced him to pull up lame against Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in his opening round of the Shanghai Masters last month. It had been feared for some days that the 27-year-old would not have enough time to recover sufficiently to give his all and he had to bow to the inevitable today.
Andy Roddick will reportedly stop by the O2 Arena to say hello to some of the British fans who fell in love with him during this year’s Wimbledon final vs. Roger Federer.
Robin Soderling will fill in for the ailing Roddick and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will become first alternate. At least the Sod is sure to add a little drama to the affair – especially if he’s in Rafael Nadal’s round robin group. The two have avoided playing each other since the Sod took Rafa out of this year’s French Open.
The World Tour Finals draw will be held tomorrow morning at the London Eye. Click here for the WTF website.
(BTW: Andy Roddick’s foundation fundraiser with Elton John is scheduled for November 30, the day after the WTF final. Click here for more info.)

i just saw this and was very disappointed, given roddick’s impressive form throughout the season. i really like andy and gained even more respect for him after that epic wimby final where he showed not only great skill, but a big heart. you never want to hear that someone is injured, especially when you know how much the guys take pride in and enjoy the competition of the WTF. they work all year to qualify. here’s hoping for a speedy recovery!
It is surprising that he’s still not fit to play. I hope that it’s more preventative and not a serious problem. Maybe having to stay off the knee after the injury makes it too difficult to come to London ready to play.
i’m sure he and his team thought long and hard about what to do and what would be best for him, health wise. he must have practiced and wasn’t healed enough. it must be pretty bad if he’s not playing. you know he only misses tournaments if he’s really hurt. he’s not one to take medical timeouts or have fitness issues. i’ve missed seeing him play!
Last year’s Wimbledon final? Is it 2010 already? 0_0
Aww! I didn’t realize the severity of his injury! When he pulled out of Paris I thought that it was a great idea to do so to be 100% ready for London!
Get well soon A-Rod! It sucks that you can’t be there! You will be missed. Heal up and come back to shred court next year! <3
You're such a hard-worker and a consistent player and strong presence on the tour…you really earned and deserved your spot this year (as you did every year).
Heal up Roddick @–8–
I wish it were Tsonga who'd benefit from A-Rod's pullout… *pouts*
Thanks for the catch, LP!
Nooo.:( He deserves to be there, what a pity about his injury. Get well soon Andy!
Precisely today I was going to ask if anyone knew if Roddick was going to be in London, since I haven’t heard from him, and this confirms my doubts.
When is the banner from? Murray is not in the banner or Del Potro?
Robin Soderling are a great player who have the game to beat anyone on the ATP tour, can’t get a better replacement for Roddick.
Hope you okay soon anyway Roddick.
