I love this video interview of Marat Safin, speaking in Paris after losing the last match of his career to Juan Martin del Potro. He says he realized during that match that he has a terrible forehand and maybe should have worked on it at some point during his career. I’m assuming he’s joking, but with Marat you never know:

Marat didn’t have a poor forehand (though you might be forgiven for thinking that if you viewed it alongside his more awe-inspiring double handed backhand), it was just more of a liability than any other stroke.
When his game broke down, it was usually the fhand that went first; bit like Venus Williams.
“Breaking rackets due to lack of technical skills” Lots of rackets.
I’m gonna miss him
During a Bercy afternoon match, one commentator said (when spotted Dmitri Tursanov among the crowd) that Marat’s farewell party continued in Amsterdam. Of course, they believe Dima was in Paris for that particular reason. He was probably just killing time before driving to Amsterdam.
Hmmm. European paparazzi are just too lazy to get something good….

i think his backhand was smoother and more natural than his forehand, even if the latter was quite good. he seemed to have much more control with backhand and could hit it anywhere and out of nowhere. missing him again

you know i’ve never seen a clip from the FO where marat won a great point and pulled his shorts down. we need to find this!
