True story – while playing tennis today, I overheard a woman on the court next to me say: “Forget the crystal meth, the toupee is the really shocking part!”
Agassi’s upcoming autobiography keeps getting juicier. Beyond the drug use, the abusive father and the admission that he hates tennis with a deep, dark passion, Agassi also reveals that he wore a wig on court. Image really was everything, it seems. Via the New York Daily News:
“Every morning I would get up and find another piece of my identity on the pillow, in the wash basin, down the plughole.” Agassi writes.
“I asked myself, ‘You want to wear a toupee? On the tennis court?’ I answered myself: ‘What else could I do?’ ”
Agassi says he was too embarrassed to admit to his premature baldness and went to great lengths to mask the shiny truth.
He claims he lost his first Grand Slam final, at the French Open in 1990, because he was worried the wig would fall off.
“With each leap, I imagine it falling into the sand,” he wrote.
“I imagine millions of spectators move closer to their TV sets, their eyes widening and, in dozens of dialects and languages, ask how Andre Agassi’s hair has fallen from his head.”
Well, at least he went for it. This was no insurance salesman from Fargo’s hair piece. It’s funny to watch this clip from Agassi’s 1990 Roland Garros final against Andres Gomez and think about his interior monologue, “Is it creeping up? I think I can feel it! Dang, missed that forehand!”
But could anything be tougher than going hairline to hairline vs. Boris Becker at the US Open?
Though it was Brooke Shields who encouraged Andre to go with the shaved head look, Andre looks happiest going au naturel with Steffi:

Now I know what happened with all these revelations. Mid-life crisis. That explains everything.
How could he possibly think that horrible toupee was better than his shaved head?
he purchased the rebel hair/mullet?! wow. it’s all becker’s and borg’s fault! to this day they have the fullest heads of hair, for non-active players, which is a lot of pressure. i can imagine it would be stressful to worry about it coming off.
wait a minute… this might explain something… roger’s seemingly always perfect hair, maybe it’s not real! hmmm…

Oh Andre, I wish you didn’t choose to air all these things. Don’t you realize how you are affecting everyone around you? Least of all your fans? I think this whole situation is very selfish of Andre! I am so mad at him right now. Why didn’t he just keep this all to himself?
So very sad. I don’t like this at all.
I hope heads roll on the side of the ATP for their corruption. But if only Andre is somehow punished, Andre’s publicity stunt to sell his book and his desire to open his big mouth will have backfired terribly. (I read they are investigating to see if they could charge him for lying under the oath)

On to talking about someone that never fails to make me feel happy and proud, Rafa.

Rafa just has too much going for him, that if he were shaved bald and was tarred and feathered and forced to wear a sombrero, he’d STILL be sexy!
His character, personality, sense of humor, philosophy, sense of justice, and his heart and smile are only a few things that makes him such a quality individual. Because of how Rafa is, I almost feel embarrassed even discussing something so frivolous and superficial.
Like so many things in his life, he’d just accept baldness as a part of life and move on. In fact, he’d go as far as to say that he was “khappy” when he had it and that he realizes that he is a “lucky guy” to have had hair to begin with. And that he is even more blessed that he lost his hair due to age and living life to the fullest. He’d also point out that many people are suffering through real tragedies or have lost their hair due to illness and so it is silly to even worry about such a thing that doesn’t affect his life.
One of so many reasons why I just love that man! The human being that is Rafa far outshines the hotness that he possesses. It’s about quality and substance (and I don’t mean Meth). Rafa has a swagger and aura about him that most men could only dream of.
