Marat Safin may be limping off the tour in a couple weeks (WAH!), but he still has the best BS meter in the game. Here are Safin’s thoughts on Andre Agassi’s recent admission (via his autobiography) that he lied his way out of a drug suspension (CBS Sports):
“One should know how to be silent, but if you are so smart you should have spoken up earlier,” Safin said of Agassi after reaching the quarterfinals at the St. Petersburg Open.
“You will never live to see such revelations from me.”
“How they will escape this situation — this is the ATP’s and Agassi’s problem.” Safin added.
Does this mean that Marat won’t be writing his own tell-all memoir? I was so looking forward to reading Notes from the ATP Underground or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Sveta.
At the very least, Safin should continue to show up at tournaments for photo ops and press conferences. He doesn’t even need to play tennis anymore. Think about it, Marat.

Or wear shirts…
HA!
I don’t think Marat has any dark side that can surprise the public (I mean it in a good way XOXO). Womanizer, drinking, partying, tanking matches, what else?
I won’t be surprised if a guy (s) claimed that he slept with Marat
Everything possible with my beloved demon!
May be “I actually love tennis (after his retirement)”
Yes, “I love tennis!” would be a shocking admission from Marat, wouldn’t it?
I would like to know what was behind that street fight he was in last year (remember when he showed up at Hopman cup with a black eye?)
Nothing extraordinary (no toupee anti-climax or drug involved).
I read somewhere (sorry forgot where it’s from) that Marat and friends were in a bar (shocking?) in Moscow and there’s some push or some argument with a well-known local lad, so they entered into a fight and he won. The news further said that Marat didn’t press charge (so we can assume that he could have been on the ‘reasonable’ side).
Got it http://tennisinfoblog.com/more-about-safins-black-eyes
Argh, and teach me to finish posts before submitting them.
He has made his point best out of all the players’ responses so far. Freaky that Dr. StrangeLove joke has set me up for the day – have to go watch some Peter Sellers now.
What you see is what you get Mr Safin! He is not stupid or even arrogant to talk about his personal life in public unlike Agassi. Some things are better left unsaid. Agassi will have a lot of explaining to do with regards to his children when they are old enough to understand.
As for men; Marat loves women too much to be interested in men lol
Atleast Mr Safin is honest during his interviews unlike Serena who came out with a load of rubbish concerning Agassi and ended up using the opportunity to plug her book instead. She reminds me of a female version of David Beckman of the tennis world; promoting everything to make money. The tennis world will miss Mr Safin for his tennis ability and personality.
Hi guys! I don’t really understand why Agassi made these revelations. It doesn’t do him any harm, I don’t think; his career is over and he’s done so many good things (his charitable work for example), I think people will forgive him. It does leave the ATP tour and men’s tennis in a bit of a mess, though. The last thing tennis needs is for people to start suspecting (with no good reason, in my opinion), that tennis players are using banned substances and getting away with it. Agassi has managed to tarnish the sport without almost no harm done to him. I think it was just a bad idea overall.
Hi alista, I agree! But this toupee admission has made me realize that Agassi was bound and determined to admit anything and everything that he’s ever done!
I love Marat. He doesn’t have time for BS. And also, that photo of him and Sveta is <3!!
While I love Marat and his quote is very bad-ass (as is the man himself), it misses the point.
This isn’t JUST the ATP’s and Andre’s problem! But I guess since this is his last year on tour..he’s not in the mood.
So far, out of all the players, Rafa seems to be the only one who stands behind the REAL issue. His quote, out of all the players, is the most thoughtful and the most relevant. Out of all the quotes so far, I am surprised that the 23 year old of the group is the one to grasp the critical point and the core of this problem. Then again, it IS Rafa we’re talking about….so, no I’m not really surprised.
Marat, you will be missed. Just one thing before you put tennis completely out of your mind: Please, PLEASE tell Dinara to get a new coach! I don’t see how she could tolerate yet another season like this one. She is not happy and her coach is not helping. Just put your foot down as the big brother. Pweeeze?! She needs a change.
P.S. ADORABLE photo. So sweet. <3
Mim, I am sooooo with you on the Safina coaching thing. That relationship is way too codependent for my taste!
Me too. Sometimes it’s creepy. Too personal to be good for career advancement.
