Serena and Venus Williams, Dinara Safina and the rest of the WTA’s top eight gathered at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar on Sunday to take part in the Sony Ericsson Year End Championships draw ceremony. Here’s the lowdown on the draw via tennis.com:
WHITE GROUP:
- Dinara Safina
- Caroline Wozniacki
- Victoria Azarenka
- Jelena Jankovic
MAROON GROUP:
- Serena Williams
- Svetlana Kuznetsova
- Elena Dementieva
- Venus Williams
The top two finishers in each round robin group advance to the semifinals, where each first-placed player will face the second-placed player from the other group. (Meaning that Venus and Serena could meet in the final, even though they’re in the same group.)
Of course, no WTA event would be complete without the ballgown competition.

Venus looks like she’s wearing a bad prom dress. And I hardly recognize Dinara!! What can I say? Too much makeup?

OMG! As much as I love Venus, that child looks a hot mess in that dress! She did say on twitter that she (and her sister) had gone all 80’s wrong, but now I believe her! What was the theme of the draw party? Bad proms relived? Remember the time when you wanted to cut your dress to shreds and strangle whoever made you wear it??? And who made Dinara look like a bad Elvira clone?
*Sigh* The tennis can only get better after this trauma, I think.
Venus is rocking something between chic Sicilian widow, French maid and goth kid’s Easter dress. I wish I had the confidence to pull that off!

Serena is always funny, even though I’m not sure she intended her outfit to be so… Probably, for the next matches, whenever I see her play, I’ll be humming “I’m every woman/It’s all in me/Anything you want done baby…” in my head…
