I’ve seen a couple funny headlines: “Can Anyone Lick Federer?” (via Swiss Info – thanks Judy!) and my favorite “Austrians Can Lick Federer Soon” (translated from Schweizer Fernsehen.)
Yes, the Austrian post office will be issuing 400,000 Roger Federer stamps in February of 2010. The stamp features a photo of Roger at the French Open. The image was chosen by Federer and his family. Roger says he feels “extremely honored” by the gesture. (Schweizer Fernsehen)
“Why Austria?” you ask. I really don’t know. Maybe it’s an indirect way of honoring Federer’s pre-French Open practice partner, the Austrian Stefan Koubek? Or maybe the Austrian Post Office is just run by a bunch of Fedophiles.
Switzerland issued their own Roger Federer stamp in 2007. Roger was the first Swiss personality to be paid this honor during his lifetime. (via Swiss Info)

Fedophiles at the Austrian post office – I doubt that very much. Maybe it is the tradition of having great athletes (usually Austrian, usually skiing) on stamps, and maybe they have run out of suitable candidates from this department. And Switzerland is so close, after all. Look forward to being able to stick Roger on my letters and cards, though!
Thanks, Fedfan! Your explanation makes much more sense than my attempts!
dude, i want both stamps…can they be purchased online and sent to the u.s.? haha
that's a lovely accent you have…
those headlines are awesome. that's a nice pic of fed on the new one. it would be cool to have those.
I love the caption on the stamp: "Bester Tennisspieler der Welt."
Freaky, you always have the BEST RRI (Random Roger Info) ever!
I'll never forget when after the Open party my friend threw, I turned to her and said "How am I ever going to get over this" and she simply said "You can't." … but I have to say, after I forwarded your article to all my miserable friends, it sparked a nice online, virtual group therapy session that got most of us through the worst of it….
I've been too busy to really keep up but whenever I come to this site but it always gives me a smile! Your post about getting over the U.S Open loss legitimately helped me and a countless number of my other friends to work through our pain!!
Anyway, keep up the good work…anything that makes me think of licking any part of Roger, even if it's just an image on a stamp, is going make my day…although I can't guarantee that I would lick the back of the stamp!!
Hi ballgrrle! Glad you found the time to check in. I'm happy that I helped you with your post-US Open therapy. Hope you're over it by now
Ha! Good thing the ink is non-toxic.
I will never truly be over it
…
I know that a lot of people, especially tennis commentators were saying that since MDF reached 15 and completed the Grand Slam, got married, AND had twins (whew I'm tired just listing them) that he might lose some motivation, and/or care less because he accomplished so much this year… but no one knows MDF like I do (ok, that sounded truly stalkerish…), anyway…I mean, his deep love of tennis and the history of the records, as well as his unassailable ambition, that I know that he really wanted to be the one person to win 6 Opens in a row…Nadal stopped him at getting 6 in a row at Wimby, so this was his last chance. I think he knew that it was very unlikely that anyone would come close to 6 straight in the modern era…Bill Tilden doesn't really count since it was so long ago and the matches were played differently then. We could all tell (at the party) that part of the reason he couldn't close it out while being just two points away was because he just wanted so badly…he wanted that record too much.
Anyway, I am so happy that he won the French…as Agassi said…it would have been a crime if he hadn't, but I feel like he still had a chance to win it in the future…but he had 2 chances (at two different Opens) to try and make 6 in a row…but now that he didn't ,the counter would have to start all over again…and as much as I love MDF, we all know that it would be impossible to do it again at this stage in his career…(but could you imagine if he did??… that would shut up all the haters FOREVER!)
For the record, I'm really glad that it was Del Po that took it out of everyone left in the field…as long as it was anyone BUT MURRAY…and as much as I do like Nadal, I couldn't have beared it if MDF lost another final to him, and all we would hear for weeks again is that maybe he's not really the GOAT and blah, blah, blah…
Wow…that was really long…guess I'm just making up for lost time.
I'm glad to see your commentators are keepin' it clean!
I like the Swiss stamp better, but they're both great! I'll check out my local stamp and coin emporium…yes, they still exist! I bet they could order them.
Hope you weren't too offended Liz ;-P … I was referring to licking the front of the STAMP as opposed to the back of it…but now that I mention it…but if I were to be alone in a room with MDF…all bet's are off! (hehehehe…)
I didn't quite understand what you meant by ordering the stamps…are you saying my local post office in California would order them from Europe for me…if not, how would I order them. A friend of mine (the same one that threw the Open party) is going to have a birthday soon and I would love to get some for her… I promise to keep it PG…well, maybe PG-13!
Hi ballgrrle!
Yes, I'm sure many readers were thinking along the same lines! The stamp store I was referring to was for stamp collectors — they will usually order special stamps from other countries for collectors. If you google "stamp collectors" and your city, you should get results of local stores or you could probably find some online….good luck!
ROTFL!
You are the best.
No no no peeps! You're getting it wrong: first you twist it, THEN you lick it … then you dunk it of course!
Sheeeeesh. People don't know how to eat Federer these days.
As always, I got excited cos I thought it read "Australia" instead of "Austria".
Dayum.
HA! I see you've put some thought into your Fed bites.
Doots, I'm sure you can lobby the Australian Post Office for a Roger Stamp. Letter writing campaign, maybe?
I liked "Austrians can lick Federer soon" I want that stamp.
loved your line, "austrian post office run by a bunch of fedophiles," ff!! teheehe , i bet they are!! i lived in innsbruck one summer.
thanks for the giggles again, ff!!
