Roger Federer beat Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s US Open semifinals: 7-6, 7-5, 7-5. It was a fairly straightforward match, but Federer pulled out some magic in the last game, breaking Nole’s serve with the help of this fantastic trick shot:
Roger Federer plays Juan Martin Del Potro on Monday afternoon for the US Open title. He’s going for history – to be the first man to win six consecutive titles at America’s Major since Big Bill Tilden did it from 1920 – 1925. Federer’s now won 40 straight matches in NYC. Can he make it 41?
Federer is playing in his 7th straight major final (his last semifinal loss was to Djokovic in the 2008 Australian Open.) It’s his 21st career major finals appearance and his 17th in the past 18 majors.
Interesting factoid – Roger Federer has played a different opponent in each of his US Open Finals:
2004 – beat Lleyton Hewitt
2005 – beat Andre Agassi
2006 – beat Andy Roddick
2007 – beat Novak Djokovic
2008 – beat Andy Murray
2009 – vs. Juan Martin Del Potro
The final will be broadcast on Monday afternoon at 4:00pm ET on CBS.

husband and I yelled outloud in disbelief when fed pulled out the tweener pass to set up match point! and yes we had to rewind. unbelievable! there were actually some fun exchanges, like the doubles-esque volleys at the net. great stuff all around! go rog!
awesome that he’s beaten so many different quality players. and they seem to be getting younger!
del po will be tough, should be a fun one!
@ judy: i did the same thing! my parents thought i was just crazy. hahaha
@ freakyfrites: roger has reached the last 17 out of 18 major finals. if he didn't lose to novak in the 2008 aussie open semis, he'd have a grand slam final streak of 18.
Yep that was a typo on my part – fixed it ASAP after publishing. You're fast! Thanks as always for the free copyediting services!
omg he made it look so simple, i hope delpo could win at least one set tomorrow…
I love how after the match Roger said it was the best shot of his life
Anyways, tomorrow will be tough, GO ROGER!
Nice little smile from Roger after the tweener. Who can blame him? That shot was awesome. Good luck to him against Del Potro, who's playing awesome tennis.
fed is going for 3 majors in a row, he'd be the first since rod laver did it 40 years ago when he won his 2nd calendar grand slam! this is super cool because in the past rog had won 3 of 4 majors in the same year, more than once, but this is the first year he has the french, so this could be another one for the books! great recap on the fed-novak semi and what will happen should fed win…

I was so happy for Roger, beating Djokovic was a little bit tricky, I was surprised that Roger celebrated that point like that, he was so amazed by it and it showed.
I am so happy, oh so happy…
Yeah, Roger was impressed by himself! I would be too:-)
The trick shot was cool, but the shot I found most impressive was the shot round the net that landed well inside the court. Wicked!
