Sam Querrey won the LA Tennis Open on Sunday, beating No. 205 ranked qualifier, Carsten Ball, in three sets: 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. It was his third final in about as many weeks and Querrey’s first ATP title since he won his first in Las Vegas last March.
Now that Sam’s the US Open Series leader, he seems to have an eye on that $1 million in bonus prize money: “If I keep playing like I am playing now hopefully I have a shot at the US Open. You don’t want to think if I do everything perfect maybe I can get to round 16. You want to think you can win it.”
Sam’s playing great tennis right now, but he’ll have to raise it to another level in Montreal and Cincinnati, where the Big Boys (including guys who aren’t 6′5″) will be ready to play. He’s also signed on to play the next four weeks of the Series – D.C., Montreal, Cincinnati, and New Haven. He’ll need to pace himself to be in best-of-five shape in NYC.
And his Samurai better save their vocal chords.

I’ve never seen his game. What’s it like?
Big serve, big forehand, big dude tennis (meaning over 6′4″) But he can move pretty quick for a giant – a little like del Potro.
Nothing that’s going to keep my DVR on overdrive.
Ah, let’s not forget who he had to beat here, and who he lost to in his last two finals. Not exactly tough competition out there lately on the men’s tour. Don’t think he’s had to take down anyone in the top 10 either.
We’ll see. Nice to see him aiming high though. You need a bit of delusion to succeed imo.
Yeah, losing to Ginepri at Indy and Rajeev Ram in Newport – I guess Sam had to go farther down the rankings to find an opponent he could beat in the finals (like into the 200s) And Ball still took him to three sets.
But to be fair, Sam beat top seed Tommy Haas in straights on Saturday. The way Haas has been playing lately, he’s more Top 10 than Nole.
I so think Sam will have some more success this summer, but I don’t think it’s coming at the US Open. He isn’t mentally tough enough yet and I think he’ll be overplayed. (Of course, my saying this virtually guarantees that he’ll win the Open!)
i like sam for the most part, especially since he moves very well for someone so tall. he hasn’t had to face the big boys yet (fed, nadal, murray), but i give him a chance to go far at the open. the match vs cilic at wimby was pretty awesome. either way, it’s great for young american tennis!
FF, Sam’s samurai created quite a stir.
