Roger did it! Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick, but just barely: 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14. What? Crazy. Congratulations are due all around for such a fabulous final. Thanks to these two guys, it’s the sport and the fans who win in the end (just like 2008!)
Of course Nike is ready to congratulate Roger. Here’s the ad:
Great stuff! Stay tuned for a final wrap later.

It was a nail biter! Not Roger’s best match ever, but ultimately a gutsy effort. He played well when he had to. Roddick played exceptionally well throughout, and held his nerves together better than Roger did, except at two crucial times: the second set tiebreaker and the last game. Congrats to Roger!
Congratulations to Roger! I feel for Andy but I’m really happy for Roger.
NICE!!!!
BIG BIG BIG props to Andy Roddick…i’ve never seen him play so well. Especially against Fed in a final. Wimbledon no less.
Congrats to Roger and Andy for an amazing final. They both played great. I’m so sad there could only be one winner.
The look in Andy’s eyes just before Sue Barker interviewed him was painful. He held back his tears pretty well, but you knew it was so close to coming out.
Wasn’t that a truly gripping final?? It was sad that there could only be one winner because they both played well. I thought Roger looked a bit flat at the beginning but that could have just been because Andy looked so sharp. I hope that Andy wins Wimbledon some day.
Today, I wanted Roger to win so that he could break the record and cement his place in history. Still, a bad day for one of my favorite players on the ATP. Did anyone else have flashbacks of Andy’s epic match from Oz a few years ago that went well into the night? I think he won that one though.
The commercial is nice and wasn’t it funny to see the NetJets commercial update to 15 straight away? Those are some marketing people holding tightly to their cash cow, don’t you think?
Gripping as in gripping my fingernails between my teeth? It was a tough one. I couldn’t decide if I was happy that it was Andy Roddick pushing Federer to the limit or if I just wanted Roger to win. But in the end, I think we can all be pretty happy. Like last year, we have a final that brought out the best in our sport.
I hate the way Roger is marketed! I want to petition Nike to stop making the wardrobe malfunctions, already.
congratulation roger…. i lowe u
First of all, Congratulations to Roger, his accomplishments speak for themselves. Nothing more needs to be said about him because we have fast run out of superlatives.
However I do believe that he was not at his best today. Understandably, he must have been under enormous pressure. For example, against the Roddick serve, he never changed his returning positioning, was nowhere near as aggressive on the 2nd serve as he usually is and on 7 occasions failed to capitalise on a breakpoint (very un-fed like). In matches gone by against Roddick, he would always vary his stance and ALWAYS attack the 2nd serve.
In saying that true champions find a way through even when they are not playing that well. Fed did just that & his 4th gear was as good as Roddick’s 5th gear.
Let this analysis take nothing away from Roddick’s performance, he was awesome. His improvement this year has been very impressive. First serve has got even better, huge improvement on his backhand, his slice is actually a weapon as opposed to a shot he played when tired. I hope he continues this upward trajectory.
For tennis fans this can only be good news and I for one am relishing the upcoming American hard court season.
Hello, gavotte! Thanks for posting. I agree with you analysis 100%! I do think it was 4th gear vs. 5th gear, with a combination of Roddick’s play and the pressure of the moment keeping Federer in check. And all of us can feel good in the end.
. . .except maybe Andy Roddick. But that’s the way of the warrior.
I got “internal bleeding” after watching the final.. the way Roger won was traumatizing.. Hats off to Andy, who played absolutely amazing. When Roger was down 2-6 in the second set tiebreak I was so afraid he had the nightmare of losing it last year coming back to him and couldn’t do it. But he hangs in there and I see determination in his eyes during the latter half of the final set. And he did it..
Congrats Roger!! You are a true warrior and champion!!!
HAH! Poor Shi Meng! You, FreakyFrites, and Dootsiez should create a RF E.R. room for post slam final emergencies.
I think Frites gnawed all her fingers down to a nub.
No, I stopped before the joints! hehehe.
Hey, I have been begging Roger to stop playing those nail-bitters, but he just won’t listen. I swear I feel my heart going so much faster on the crucial points, every time Roger served yesterday, my heart almost stopped, and all the chances he got to break Roddick that he didn’t convert. I have been reading this blog when I found it around the time of Roland Garros and I love it because I can see and feel the ADORATION for Roger and I went back and read every single entry since its inception, it is such a great blog, my husband sometimes gives me a hard time about Roger, but yesterday he was the one telling me that Roger was going to win during the whole match. And please ignore my grammar and bad punctuation, I am not from this country.
I agree. Federer made the last two Wimby finals such nailbiters, it was so scary to watch! I am so glad Federer pulled through this year! Congrats!
