By “ironclad” I was referring to Elena’s physique. She’s really fit. And I don’t think she gagged her match away anymore than Roddick did – I mean he had plenty of opportunities throughout the match (like that tiebreak) and it still went the limit. If players choke against Serena it’s because she’s wrapped her fingers around their throats.

I’m with you on Justine, though! Miss her and her brand of tennis. But there’s got to be a good reason why she’s gone and Serena’s still around – helps to have longevity when you’re going after titles.

the other women are gag artists- Dementieva- ‘iron clad’ …please!!! The reason behind Serena’s resurgence is clear- Justine retired. Serena should have lost 10 times in Grand Slams, but her opponents gag- I’ll give her this- she is the fiercest player ever.Add that to the gag and that gives her 5-6 slams she probably wouldn’t have…The NBC commentator said she was the first woman to go 6 years between titles here…Evonne Goolagong wnet 9 years between her’s – 1971 and 1980…the media is soooo quick to laud the Williams every step.

Congrats to Serena! I just felt bad for Venus. She had trouble getting the 1st serves in and was not moving that well. I wish the match would have been 3 sets. oh well. I just hope Venus can get motivated from this loss like Serena did last year

YEah, I think she is a contender – give her a couple more Major titles and she’s in the conversation. I think she plays at a whole other level from any woman, ever, on tour. Sharapova and Henin and of course Venus can threaten her, but in terms of consistency and longevity she is showing to be tops. I can’t believe she won her first Major a decade ago and is still the woman to beat in this day and age.

Yeah, I was surprised at Venus’s energy level, too. I really wonder if we’ll ever get the story on the knee. I admire V’s refusal to make excuses, but it looked like it may have affected her a bit today. Of course Serena’s huge serve and vicious ground strokes didn’t make things any easier.

I hope Venus takes her crown back next year.

And I think Serena is definitely a GOAT contender, now that she’s at 11. Great to see her motivated and it will be fun to see her try to win more.

Venus looked so flat today that from the first few games I felt that Serena would be the victor. But after that Dementieva match, she certainly deserves it.
