My apologies in advance to all serious tennis folk who find this post ridiculous (Lately I feel like I should rename my blog “Rafa’s Knees and Roger’s Jacket”.) But I just couldn’t resist these super-slick photos of Roger Federer in his new Wimbledon jacket, especially since I’ve complained so much about the over-all, over-done look (hate the vest and the murse!) Also, Nike tries to explain its logic behind the new duds, but let’s check out the money shots first.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present you with Uber-Federer:

YOWZA! Hummanh! Drool! Etc. . .

Nike has some ’splainin’ to do! (via Hype Beast):

“This year we took inspiration from a jacket in the Nike Sportswear line, the M-65. Based on this modern interpretation of a classic military silhouette from 1965, we used the body as a starting point and created a tailored look for Roger to wear when walking on and off court. This contemporary piece is intricately hand-crafted and includes engraved zipper pulls with premium detailing throughout the garment that’ll give Roger a clean, understated look as he walks on court. The herringbone texture speaks to traditional menswear, tailoring elements, bespoke suits, and classic menswear fabric.

There is also a coordinating vest, polo and trousers that Roger can wear in different ways depending on the weather throughout the tournament. These have also been designed to be worn for his pre-match warm-ups as they incorporate Dri-FIT fabric technology that works to keep them cool and wick sweat away from the skin.”

I am intrigued by the idea of Roger wearing the pieces in “different ways depending on the weather.” Any chance of him wearing the vest without a shirt underneath? That would be a classic Wimbledon moment, for sure.

    Liberace gay.

  2. alista says:

Ok, I like the first photo. But the rest … I’ve never understood why they’ll chop off some his best features (his oh so well-defined calves) and make him look like he has no lower legs. Weird.

And, I still hate the whole getup.

  3. dootsiez says:

Everybooooodyyy, yeaaaaaaah, rock your boooodyyyyyyy, yeaaaaaaaaah …

I got lost where Nike started going on about “a clean understated look”. I actually think the jacket looks fab over just the polo and shorts. But WITH the pants and the waistcoat, there’s just wayy too much going on.

  4. jfk says:

Hot hot hot. Nothing much else to say.

  5. Alice Marble says:

“Thrilla in Vanilla!” You very funny lady.

I’m just meh about the getup, but I like the shirtless vest-only option.

  6. tennisnakama says:

I simply don’t understand Nike’s taste, particularly a gold bag. Everything kills Roger’s classic look. ” Just bad taste! 趣味が悪いです!(in Japanese)”

    • freakyfrites says:

I think “bad taste” describes this quite well. It’s just over done and bordering on tacky. But Roger looks nice in his regular polo and shorts, at least.

  7. patzin says:

The comments in the article are so funny. thanks

  8. Imran Akram says:

jeez freakyfrites you dont like roger much do you…

i dont care what he wears, he’s always looking f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c to me.

  9. AdM says:

    #2 receding hairline

    • jfk says:

No, it’s not receding. That’s just his natural hairline. It’s always been like that.

      • alista says:

RThat’s true. Anyway, is there anyone else on the tour with hair that’s more fab than Roger’s? Seriously, the guy has the most amazing hair (and not just on his head:-))

    AMAZINGLY HAWT!!

  11. alista says:

OK, Bodo just tore up Roger on Tennis.com. So now, I’m hot under the collar and I feel honour bound to defend this costume. Did he really have to dedicate a whole post to rip Roger’s clothes? He’s a professional sportswriter … he can leave that sort of thing to the likes of us, don’t you think?

    Stick to the tennis Bodo!

    • Ana says:

      Hello, Alista!

As much as I agree with you, there is not much we can do about it. Although, I find nothing wrong or disturbing with Federer’s outfit, I am sure you have your own opinion as everyone else does as well; to the extent, that I am pretty sure every Wimbledon 2009/Roger Federer’s Opening Round doesn’t fail to criticize his outfit (mostly negative). Federer’s “controversial” outfit is mentioned everywhere, which is annoying.

…Regarding Peter Bodo, he has “admitted” to “characterizing Federer as a girly-man” in his article “Sprezzatura,” which is all about Federer after winning the French Open:

      http://tennisworld.typepad.com/tennisworld/2009/06/sprezzatura.html

…I guess Bodo forgot all about it whe he wrote his mos recent article “Dressing Roger”.

      I hope this serves as a consolation…

      Have a good day!

      • dootsiez says:

Bodo has a funny view of what constitutes a “man”. That’s for sure.

      • alista says:

Yeah, I saw the Sprezzatura post after the French Open which almost made me forgive Bodo all his past non-tennis critiques of Roger. It’s not even that I mind Bodo making a remark about the outfit, it’s just that I think a whole post on the topic is even more overkill than he, I or anyone else might think the outfit is. And he went out of his way to really rip into Roger; it was pretty cruel, I thought.

How about a post on the fact that Roger is a supremely successful athlete who has a perfectly normal life? The man has a steady relationship, a baby on the way, a great family, conducts himself with class and is STILL winning major titles. I can’t think of any other athlete about whom you can say that. Success usually goes right to the head. He can wear whatever the heck he darn well pleases; I don’t have to like it.

I’ll spend some time making harmless remarks about it, but when Bodo or any pro sportswriter devotes an entire post to it, that’s just not right, in my humble opinion. He’s supposed to be a professional sportwriter for crying out loud. Would he write a piece like this for a mag? I doubt it; None of his peers would take him seriously after that. But he’ll throw it up on his blog because it’s easy pickings.

Okay, end of rant. Bodo has annoyed me many times before and I don’t expect that this will be the last time.

  12. Ana says:

    Hi, Alista!

“He can wear whatever the heck he darn well pleases; I don’t have to like it.”—–Nicely said!

“…but when Bodo or any pro sportswriter devotes an entire post to it, that’s just not right, in my humble opinion.”—–You are completely right…so that makes 2 humble opinions!
    (haha)

Maybe Bodo has nothing else to do…

I wonder what Roger thinks about all the controversy about his outfit; either he is unaware of it, or he just doesn’t care, probably the latter one…

  13. sasha says:

Bodo doesn’t have a nice topic to doodle upon at the Wimbledon Opening hence he picked on his favorite topic, which is Roger. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out Bodo since we all know that he has a fickleminded nature. He must have had a sore tooth r he woke up at the wrong side of the bed when he dedicated his entire post to Roger’s outfit which i think is very pathetic. No matter how many times this so called know it all sportswriters take turns in bashing Roger wether in how he dressed or how he plays and what nots, there’s always this line seperating them and Roger and that is they will always be the one looking up and scramble after him and Roger will always be the one looking down upon them atop his perch of superstardom.

    • Ana says:

      Hi, Sasha!

Wow…I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Somehow, it isn’t anymore about Roger’s outfit, instead it is about Peter Bodo…and it’s preferable this way (haha).

      • alista says:

I like it! Let’s all bash Bodo instead of talking about the outfit. Ana, I agree, Roger probably just doesn’t care. Why should he? I suspect he only cares what Mirka and his friends and family think.

        • Ana says:

Yeah, Alista! Well, Roger said he hopes “people will like it”, but apparently, not many do…

This whole thing is just so funny!

  14. jenn says:

Again I love the outfit, however just today I got a good look at the pants for the first time, and I’m really not crazy about them. He should have just skipped the pants altogether and just stuck with the shorts. But I guess I’m one of the few people that actually loves everything else. I think it suits him.

  15. sweeney says:

Capital G Capital A Capital Y and its a beautiful thing

  16. Shirley Clarke says:

I think that Roger looks FAB and it lovely that he makes such a effort in his outfits he wears each year at Wimbledon. I think people should give him a little more praise for making Wimbledon so special and talking about special I think that Roger is a very special person. He is a lovely person and in my opinion I have never in all the years I have been watching Wimbledon have I seen such a lovely, pleasure to watch tennis player and I have been watching Wimbledon for 35 years so that is saying something. He is going to be a father soon and will make a wonderful father and is probably a wonderful husband. Good on you Roger and hope you WIN the trophy.

  17. Tennisguy says:

hahaha this is absurd. The clothes aren’t terrible, but the poses (aka flying jacket) and the look on Roger’s face are priceless.
