I could use this headline after every Serena Williams presser. She gives more WTF quotes than anyone on tour, including these head-scratchers from today’s press conference at Wimbledon. Is she speaking in koans or cliches? I leave it for you to decide:
Serena on the Williams sisters:
Q. What’s different from (Venus’s) game and yours on the grass?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Uhm, I think mine is more gritty, you know. I’m obviously smaller. Well, shorter than she is (laughter). So, uhm, you know, I’m more quicker as opposed to faster. But we make a great doubles team (smiling).
Serena on grunting:
Q. You say sometimes you (grunt); sometimes you don’t. Is that a conscious thing at all? Does it just turn on and turn off? When points are more intense, it tends to happen? What?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It’s definitely not conscious. It’s more just ‑‑ I guess it’s effort level. I think I always give a hundred percent, but sometimes I’m so zoned I don’t grunt. Sometimes I’m so zoned that I do grunt.Whatever way it is, I just don’t know when it’s coming.
Serena on sex:
Q. Michael Stich did an interview today criticizing some women for overplaying their sex appeal. What do you feel when former players criticize female players like that?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Sex sells.Q. So you think it’s just a normal part of the game, yeah?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Sex sells. I don’t know. I just know that. That’s what everyone says, so…Q. And is it good or bad?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I think Angelina Jolie is great. She’s hot. She’s super sexy. Everyone wants to see her, male or female.Q. And tennis players, should it be the sport or the sex?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It’s across the board.
Serena acting strangely (or should I say normally?)
Q. When did you get here and when did you first get out on a court here?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You’re really concerned about me, huh (smiling)? You really want me to do well here. I appreciate it.But I promise you, I’ve had a lot of time to prepare. I got here in plenty of time. The same time I get here every year, so…
I’ll be all right. I’ll try. I’ll try just for you (smiling).
Q. You don’t want to say when you got here?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don’t remember. It feels like forever. Don’t you worry.Q. Thanks.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Thank you.
Serena will have a chance to prove her match-readiness soon, when she takes on Neuza Silva of Portugal in the first round of Wimbledon. Lucie Safarova could be her tough second round opponent.

I just LOVE the woman! I mean, how could you not love someone whose thought process seems so different from that of fairly logical human being? The amazing thing is that there is some logic in what she’s saying, Serena logic! Of course she’s going to interpret a journalist’s question about when she got here and what her preparation was as a sign of concern and appreciation for HER! Well she’s Serena, he better be concerned, I know I would! lol. The woman is amazing! Hope she gets to be quicker that speedy Venus and win Wimby!
LOL, Julie, I COMPLETELY agree!
.
LOVE her! Hehehe, she must be so much fun to hang out with
Her confidence is to die for!
Here’s to a Williams sisters final! Boy were we spoiled last year: a Rafa/Roger final AND a Venus/Serena final (in both singles and doubles). Ahhh…Tennis is bliss.
Get well soon Rafa!
Btw, LOVE Serena’s genie-in-a-bottle outfit! How appropriate
Also, how CUTE is the doting big sister look on Venus’s face? Loving her oh-so-sophisticate and lady-like look! So fitting, after all, she IS the Queen of Wimbledon!
It’s utterly OUTRAGEOUS that they didn’t seed her #1! Completely unjustified! I’m so peeved by this that I won’t even bother ruining my happy post to tell you just how peeved I am!
I’m just glad this time she didn’t say “Everyone knows who the REAL #1 SEED is, and frankly it’s me.”
Ha! Well, I think even Serena might agree that Venus is the “real” No. 1 seed – right???
Hi Julie and Mim!
Loving the Serena love! It’s her world, we’re just living in it.
And I totally agree about seeding Venus #1 – her record at Wimbledon is outrageously good and Safina’s record is pretty dismal. It’s not a knock on Safina – I think she deserved to be seeded #1 at the French. But Wimbledon? Centre Court belongs to Venus until someone proves otherwise.
My husband worked on a commercial that had Serena in it (the HP computer one, if you’ve seen it.) He says she was lots of fun on set and really nice to everyone. I wish he’d become best friends with her so we could all hang out
She did sign a tennis ball for him, though
i think she’s a moron and was just stoned during this presser
There’s always one. Lost your sense of humour recently?
