Roger unveiled his new Wimbledon look today on his Facebook page (click here), (Roger will be taking Rafa’s place as first up on Centre Court, which makes me nervous for some reason.)
Of course The Independent described Roger’s Wimbledon look in an article called “Federer cramps Murray’s style“:
If the Murray sweater looked like a response to the cardigan Federer wore here last year, the Swiss revealed yesterday that he has taken the fashion game to another level. The champion of tennis style will march on to Centre Court for his first match tomorrow in a military-style jacket. According to the Nike publicity machine, it will be “a more contemporary look this year, whilst still retaining the stylistic cues which make him stand out from the other players”.
I think it looks good – and I’ll reserve final judgment until we see more. I do wish it was more Rod Laver and less Elton John, but if anyone can pull it off, Roger can. **UPDATED** – The new, larger photo makes Roger look like a bellhop – a really, really hot bellhop. “Why, yes, you can take my bags to my room, Roger!”
If I had a Roger “Ken” doll, I’d probably dress him in this Wimbledon-casual look:
Hey, isn’t that Jose Higueras? Looks like Roger’s saying something like, “Thanks, Jose, those tips you gave me finally worked out. . .not!”
Thanks to GTT reader Esther C. for telling us the origin of the Jose Higueras photo: Laura from RF.com. Be sure to check out more of her fine work by clicking here.
RF would like to take your bags to your room. Photo via Facebook.

I………………. think I hate it already. But I’ll wait until I see it bigger. But I’m very afraid it will be horrible. I wish he just wore that perfect and beautiful casual jacket ! Sometimes, the simpler, the better. I truly hope it will look better than what it seems, but if it doesn’t I will have to admit that Murray is better dressed and it would be awful !!
God, I just thought of one thing : IF he wins, he will wear it for the trophy presentation and it will appear on each and every photo !! Maybe the fashion gods will interfere just to prevent this from happening and he will lose because of this fashion faux-pas…
Okay, I’ll just wait, but right now, I’m scared !
Hehehe! I see what you’re saying – this look definitely says “I’m trying really, really hard.” Casual elegance is always the better way to go.
Oh well. . .we’ll just have to wait and see – I have faith in Roger’s modeling skills!
He has released the picture on his facebook page, anf I think it’s OK. But not gorgeous. I mean, there is nothing exceptional or beautiful or special. Plus, I don’t like the pockets. But it’s a fine look, i *kinda* like it actually. As you say, Roger’s modeling skills should do the job anyway ! I think he would look good even in Murray’s boring tennis clothes, or in Roddick’s loose-fitting ones ! One exception : the sleeveless shirt !
I still remember some pics of him wearing one : traumatic !
Hi! With all due respect to everyone that thinks this isn’t an “appropriate” look for Roger Federer during Wimbledon, I think you are overlooking just how fitting it actually is for him to carry such style during this tournament.
The jacket resembles a “military” style that embodies elegance, sophistacation, and yet it is very simple, which is very fitting; because, not only is he “elegance” pesonified (regardless what he wears), but most importantly, it soldierly reveals his fighting spirit that has surfaced more than ever during the French Open. Moreover, it exposes his personality as well, since it exposes perfection, strength, slickness, intelligence, solidness, and focus; very much what the members of the military organizations represent. If this doesn’t embody Roger Federer, I don’t know what does.
Equally important, the design, at the same time, is very simple, generating the approachable and traditional Roger everyone knows. What is more traditional than the military???
Roger Federer’s Wimbledon 2009 outfit, contemplates a more threatening force than anything he ever wore at the previous Wimbledon tournaments, which configures right with how relaxed he feels after winning the French Open this year, and “if the past is any guide, a relaxed Federer is the most dangerous Federer” (Wimbledon Preview, Tennis.com).
It is a very distinguished ensemble, just as Roger Federer is among the other players.
Thank-you…
Sorry, I forgot to point out that in order to fit into the “Wimbledon theme”, Roger Federer does not need to dress old-fashioned to be traditional.
Thank-you…(again)
For example, to support my statement above, the impression that a military uniform gives is one of tradition and excellence, without being dressed considerably “old-fashioned”, even though, their uniforms haven’t changed very much over the years; and yet, no one thinks “old-fashioned” when looking at them…I hope this is clear enough…
I really want to like it … but, I HATE it. I just think it’s so not Roger. I looked at it on FB too and the pockets break the line of the jacket, it looks like a bag; not at all svelte and stylish like he usually is. In particular, I hate the mandarin collar and I don’t think it will work well with shorts.
You know what, he should go for the throwback shorter shorts. Those fine legs I would pay good money to see:-)
Are they turning Roger into Elvis of tennis? Perhaps this is inspired by that Gillette commercial LOL. Let’s wait and see if this is what Roger is going to wear tomorrow.
Nike finally found something that is unattractive even on Roger. As far as I can tell, it’s a modified Safari look — which would be okay — but the pockets are terrible. The jacket he wore in Paris was definitely better.
Surprised at the reaction. coz I LOVE IT! Much much better than the 06 cream horror, or last yr’s grandpa cardigan. 07’s jacket was okay imo. But this year’s got attitude. Flove flove.
FYI I love elvis too. So ya know … if Roger wants to shave his chest and wear flares, I’m fine with that.
Judging by the picture Roger posted on his Facebook, I think it looks good. (The picture the Times posted is a little… eh.) I don’t know whether I love it as much as I loved the cardigan and the suit/blazer (those were all just extremely classy and beautiful), but it is rapidly growing on me. I’m sure it looks even better in real life.
gee the shadows of the pockets looked like golden details, god that was scary..
i actually kinda like it. it’s different; more modern. i think if anyone can pull this jacket off it’s roger and on facebook it doesn’t look too bad.
I admit, it doesn’t look too bad on FB. But it doesn’t look GOOD either. I’m going to have to give it a thumbs down.
Now that I’ve seen the bigger photo I have to say – it looks like a bellhops uniform.
I agree with alista – get this man a pair of short shorts! I think short shorts and a little tucked in white polo a la Rod Laver would be WAY cuter.
But I think Roger will wear it well, regardless.
Hate it. Not even close to practical looking. A very affected look for tennis.
………what’s with the pockets……
Hmmm it’s making me cringe a bit! As someone said, too affected and ‘try hard’. Wimbledon is a tournament full of tradition and understated elegance, so the outfits should reflect that I think…futuristic safari bellboy isn’t really the way to go lol. Also don’t like how Roger appears to have no eyes?!
Rod Laver inspired look would have been great! Maybe in 2010!
A hot bell hop…hmmmm. I’m still on the fence about this one. It’s sure a lot better than the Great Gatsby cardigan he wore last year. I’m going to save my judgment for tomorrow when he steps on court.
Yup…a really hot bellhop…lol!
I actually kinda like it, but i can see how everyone thinks its too fashion forward for a an event with such old traditions like Wimbledon.
I think it looks more sci-fi male nurse in this photo
i’m trying to imagine him (Daddy to be), holding the new baby in this getup.
altho he looks lovely, i dont get the street clothes thing-remember Agassis cut-offs!
frankly i’d rather see these boys in the connors/mac/borg short shorts
now that would be fun, old school. And let me say while i’m at it when are the ladies going to stop wearing the crotch length dresses/skirts -their game would be different if they wore NORMAL attire SHORTS-like they do when they practice. Sorry.
Hi Natasha!
Totally agree with the short skirts! They need to rock the shorts or the classic tennis dresses. Much more flattering
I’m so with you on the shorter shorts for the guys! Roger has great legs – why not show them off?
Someday we’re going to be in charge – then watch out!!!
He started dropshots in medium form under Jose. He took it to a new level this year, but the focus definitely started with Higueras.
It’s the little things…
p.s. I like the jacket.
i kinda love it….military esque.Really Awesome.Roger’s fashion sense is really gearing into another level.Fearless and Stylish and that Roger Federer could only pull off.
“Move over, Grandpa Murray ..coz I’m In with the New ,out with the Old…(Please pick up after me, ok”…LOL!)- Roger
It’s awful. I hope no one ever wears something like this again… or at least not for another 700 years.
it’s PeRFect!i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it!!!! It’s just too fashion for some traditional people. It’s fine in all. Looking forward to see it mixed up with shoes and shorts.
What I think about this outfit *naughty version 1*:
“Why, thank you for bringing my luggage, kid… let’s see. Mmm, how about you come back for you tip here in my room, say… around midnight?”
What I think about this outfit *naughty version 2 – In the navy*
“Who knew Switzerland had a navy!? And such a fine one. Do they take civilians in their boats? Because I surely want to be in this one…”
You are so BAD! But, ditto:-)
What I *really* think of this outfit:
On anyone else, I’d say simply “overkill”. Too catwalk, too metro, too Tom Cruise’s white uniform in “A Few Good Men”. All that AND a golden monogram.
But on Roger? It looks pretty great.
Edit – after seeing the vest, I gotta say: CAPITAL F-A-I-L
The vest is very silly and it has to go asap.
Looks like we’re of the same mind.
Ok, just caught a glimpse of the outfit on tv. The jacket, MAYBE … but that waistcoat has GOT to go.
I think you guys are all crazy
no but really, the jacket is not only sick but I’m dying to get one.
Roger looks simply amazing. He is all set for Wimbledon and break all past records. All The Best!!
