Maria Sharapova took her inner pitbull onto the terre battue today, mauling Nadia Petrova in the second round of the French Open: 6-2, 1-6, 8-6. And what a way to do it – winning five straight games in the first, flailing in the second and fighting back from a break down in the third.
Once the match was tied 6-6 in the third, did anyone doubt that Maria was going to win? If she was playing Dinara Safina or Serena Williams, we’d have something to worry about. But this was Nadia Petrova across the net and Sharapova wanted payback for the retirement rumors her countrywoman had been spreading in the locker room (click here).
New rumor: Nadia Petrova’s considering retirement after losing in the second round of the French to someone ranked almost 100 spots below her. Meowwww!
The ambitious Maria won’t stop at asserting her dominance on the court – her comeback attack plan includes the virtual world, as well. Maria’s already back to No. 1 – in Yahoo! searches. Take that Mandy Moore! Cry to mama, Compost Bins!

Mmmm, we should start using this alternative ranking ASAP. Sure, Yaroslava Shvedova is #98 at the WTA, but where is she at the Yahoo Searches, huh?
I wonder how the ATP guys rank on search engines, as well:
Imagine – Roger to Rafa: “You may be #1 at the ATP, but what REALLY matters is that I’m ranked higher than you at Google Trends. Be honest, kid, you KNOW it’s Google that rules the world.”
Ha! But could Roger beat the Jonas brothers and eyelash extensions?
So true.me may be nos 2 but i noticed that his fans (in facebook) keeps on growing.
Way to go Maria. I’m just so sad about Marat ;’(. Mandy Moore- who is she?
Mandy Moore is a teen-pop sensation and an actress in such films as American Dreamz and Saved! She also played herself on the t.v. show Entourage.
You could always look her up on Yahoo!, just to piss off Maria!
I know who she is. She dated A rod. She’s talentless. No offense. I just don’t get why she is famous.
Petrova’s a head case against Sharapova. I thought she was going to go down 1 and 1 or something.
Mandy Moore. Unh-huh …
You should’ve seen me, I was near heart-attack. It was worth it though to see her celebrate! What a win, and a big one.
So the Glimmer Twins Maria and Venus live to play yet another day. Both gave me heart palpitations in winning their matches too. I really like Petrova and she and Maria put on an excellent match but in the end Maria, who never goes down without a fight, just had that little bit extra. Sorry Nadia.
And Venus! Safarova came out on fire and with a determination to not lose three matches to Vee. But when the camera panned to Venus’ face at the end of the first set and she looked like she wanted to cry, I thought, ‘oh no.’ At least this time, she didn’t argue to keep playing in the darkness like she did last year against Pennetta. I’m glad she waited to regroup and came back for the win. One more day to give me a heart attack, lol.
Glimmer Twins! What about Jankovic? Maybe she and Bethanie Mattek can be the Glitter Twins?
I had a feeling Venus was in for a nightmare against Safarova. What a tough competitor! Lucie cracks me up because she looks so small and weak, but has the strokes and game face to take on a Williams sister.
Glad Venus got through – it was a tough second round.
I’m shocked that Maria toped some seach engine results… I mean really- she isn’t what she’s hyped (her marketing department) to be, has had an o.k. career (way more women have had more sucess, she’s so inconsistent), and she’s average looking at best.
I know millions of people would not be dissapointed if she retired. I encourage it!
