Phew! First round action is (almost) over at Roland Garros and we’ve seen the full cycle of players sliding in and out of the French Open draw. Some have looked better than others, and I’m not just talking serves and dropshots.
Let’s go Coco Chanel cum Fug Girls and take a look at what’s en vogue on la terre battue.
FEDERER VS NADAL: Roger beats Rafa for the second time in a week! Love the red accents on the belt and button placket.
Roger : Tennis Player what Rafa : Flamingo!
Coco Chanel once said “Elegance is refusal” and I wish Nadal had refused this Nike get up! The pink shirt is good, but the neon yellow sweatbands and electric blue swooshes add up to way too much.
Klara Zakopalova shows Rafa how to work the pink and yellow without looking like a Don Johnson joke.
Tho’ after today, Klara’s looking for the t-shirt: “I survived 8 match points against Serena Williams and all I got was this stinkin’ t-shirt”.
Speaking of Serena Williams, her dress was as questionable as her form:
It’s like that dress you take off the rack at TJ Maxx and say, “Maybe it looks better on.”
Serena did double(s) duty on Tuesday, taking the court with her sister, Venus, after that tough three-set win over Zakopalova. Is anyone else in the mood for rainbow sherbet?
Love the two piece version of Venus’s stunning Eleven dress. (The doubles match was stopped for darkness in the third set.)
Zheng Jie and Yan Zi prefer pastels to brights:
Zheng takes on Portuguese sensation, Michelle Larcher De Brito, in her second round singles match.
JANKOVIC VS. SHARAPOVA: Both players have the blues (and both are into the second round), but Jelena’s the sharper of the two.
Jelena shows Maria how to navigate the fine line between tennis player and ice skater.
Maria’s still stuck in house dress land.
Elena Dementieva is appropriately dressed – for a new-fangled nun.
(Lucie Hradecka wore it better playing the Williams sisters in dubs today.)
Alize Cornet’s first round match was suspended due to darkness, but she’s not lagging behind when it comes to fashion:

LOVE the classic Lacoste style!
Speaking of classic Lacoste, let’s give it up for the Magician, playing his 20th (and last) Roland Garros:

Santoro’s first round match against Christophe Rochus was suspended due to darkness. Rochus is up 2 sets and 5-3 in the fourth. Is it too late for Fabrice to rage against the dying of the light?
Question: Why is Nike putting everyone BUT Nadal in sleeveless shirts? Is it just to torture us?
Del Potro and his lanky arms made it past Michael Llodra on Tuesday in straights.
Leave it to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to sex-up the most tired Adidas ensemble:
Of course, the thrill of victory is always in style. (He beat countryman Julien Benneteau in four.)
And then there’s James Blake, sad in a sack:
The American went out to an Argie “nobody” dirtballer, Leonardo Mayer in the first round.
The headband makes a comeback as the hottest on-court accessory. Who wears it best?
Gisela Dulko or Victoria Azarenka (both play 2nd rounds on Wednesday)
Or the tennis divas of yesteryear?
And here’s a final shot to round out our fashion wrap:
Nice to see the photographers putting the “pit” to good use!
If this post was too silly for you, take Tuesday’s results and write a thesis about Ferrero defeating Ljubicic in five:

OK, this was fashion forward and funny as all get out.
But yes, let’s give it up for Fabrice. I’m gonna miss that enormous classic French tennis talent , fashion, and je ne c’est quoi. Bonne chance, mon ami.
I know Nike will pay much more for a player to represent them on court than other brands, including Lacoste. But well, Lacoste is classic, minimalist and chic. I browsed a Lacoste shop in LA a month ago and thought: yeah, this stuff is even more conservative than RL Polo. But the color and cut were modern, and I thought: my fit and lovely daughter would look great in this Lacoste stuff, and her mother might too.
T’it bec, Fabrice. Je t’adore.
Hey FF! Great post!
I don’t really have to say much besides that (except I don’t mind the Rafa ensemble as a whole)!
Roger looks good in everything he wears. And I’m not just saying that because I am biased. Okay, I am.
I am biased and i’d say Roger really looks good!and del potro too i might add.
Great post. Really good fun and enjoyable. Thanks!
Loved the Lacoste style..soooo french don’t you think?
What i love the most on roger’s polo is the tiny stripe and the satin like fabric. As for Rafa’s bright pink t-shirt, IMO is a great choice of Nike because he is as male as a man can be, so pink makes him look really cool rather than silly.
it already made him silly if you don’t happen to notice.
Taste is kind of subjective, so I didn’t notice something silly as you did. Nadal in pink seems cool and juicy IMHO.
Mine too!
I think I’m the only one not too fond of Roger’s orange/red details with the blue. It’s not that I find them ugly, I just think they really strong focal points. It’s always the first thing I see when I see his photos, and that’s not fair – c’mon, the man has a new trim, I want to look at his hair!
Roger’s hair, after all, exists to be looked at! It may be the only thing about him that’s even more perfect than his beautiful shots.
I like Rafa’s “I’m a 10 year-old girl and the year is 1989″ costume. No, that’s not well-dressed at all. But it’s funny. And since, though good looking, he’s not my type at all, I have no problem with lack of beauty on his part.
when i look at roger’s photos, i noticed Everything about him.And that includes all….his hair, his face, his clothes his shoes ,his expressions, his smile…as in everything…
^ think everyone just completely missed the point: forget Roger, forget Rafa, JO-WILLY TSONGA LOOKS FAB! *le swoon, le drool* Fashion is attitude.
I had to vote for Roger, because he’s Roger! He always looks good, even in his UPS man togs.
I still like Rafa’s pink, yellow, and black. Maybe there is a little too much yellow, but I agree with nosuic — his amazing muscles and Spanish guapisimo look good in the pink.
Alize’s dress is great!
I still like Maria’s dress, but it looks much better when she’s pirouetting on the baseline, and not so good in motion.
Del Potro looks bad in everything (sorry, Anne — he just affects me that way!)
Serena — VA VA VA VOOM! I’m sure many of the guys don’t mind the TJ Maxx look!
And Fabrice, thanks for the years of classic tennis. Reconsider retirement, won’t you?
Having now seen the outfits ‘live’ (on the TV) I’d have to say that Rafa’s looks good on him. Young with an edgy feel..suits him. I like it! Sharapova’s outfit also looks MUCH better in motion than in ’still’ photos..actually rather graceful. NOT very supportive in the bust area though!
Is your TJ Maxx the same as our (in the UK) TK Maxx??? If so I totally get Serena’s outfit!
Oh, how funny! I bet it is. Big store, lots of questionable clothes on markdown? I wonder why they changed the name?
