Lately, Roger Federer’s personal life has been as news-worthy as his on-court exploits. It’s hard to know what to make of it all – wedding bells and babies, racquet smashing and mental breakdowns. . .
Blogger Van Sias, of Tennis Talk, Anyone?, offers us this considered perspective on Roger Federer’s current situation:
You know, this might be one of the biggest understatements ever made, particularly for GOTOTENNIS, but I’m going to make it anyway:
Roger Federer is one of the most intriguing, captivating and scrutinized players to come around on either tour in years. I know, pretty obvious, right? But think how much his every move is noted by tennis fans around the world. And if he’s in a slump, how everyone and their mom wants to give him advice (yours truly definitely being among them). Every time he does something, it’s immediately on the radar of everyone that pays attention to the sport. And lord knows we comment on it!
So why stop now?
There were two things Federer did in the past few days that made headlines, and while I might question some of what he does (like not finding a full-time coach), I can’t be happier about what he’s done.
First, the wildcard to Monte Carlo: Now this, my friends, is what I’m talking about! Don’t rest, don’t shy away from the young guns—go after them with every bit of energy you have! Federer is the hunter now and needs to embrace that role. If he does, watch out.
Then, of course, there’s the marriage: There, it’s done. Let’s move on. I promise I’m not trying to trivialize it (especially as someone who’s getting married in a few months!), but this can’t be anything but good. You always hear once parenthood or marriage comes in, it hurts an athlete. I just don’t see that happening at all here, and I think he’ll be in a better place for it.
So Roger (and Mirka), congratulations on the recent moves. And just remember, we’re all watching and cheering you on!

That’s a great article. I hope Roger is in good spirits after his marriage and does really well at this tournament.
Yeah! I love the good vibes of this article. I agree about the Monte Carlo wild-card being a good thing for Roger (and us Fed fans!)
Yeah, I thought Van had a nice take – up beat and realistic.
Read somewhere today that Roger told a “close friend” of his that his wedding day was the happiest day of his life. So that’s gotta put someone in a good mood, right?
Still no wedding pictures right Freaky? I’ve been looking myself online and haven’t found anything yet
No! I bet Mirka took them all on that digital camera she’s always using. . .
Hopefuly his marriage will bring on some good result in MonteCarlo!
Yes…still no wedding pictures???Roger and Mirka are really good at keeping everything secret…
Hey everybody, thanks for the kind words! I thought these two things that he’s done recently demonstrate such positivity that they should be acknowledged. It just shows that he’s in a good frame of mind despite a tougher-than-usual start to the season—to me, at least!
