Yes! My favorite clay court event will include my favorite player! Roger Federer will be playing in next week’s Monte Carlo tournament. Federer has never won the event, but has finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal for the past three years.
According to Roger’s website:
Dear Fans,
I have decided to accept a wildcard into the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters tournament that begins on Monday. I will head there this weekend to start the clay court season.
Thanks to all of you for your continued support.
All the best,
Roger
Monte Carlo’s tournament director, Željko Franulović, couldn’t be happier:
“Several months ago I announced that Roger had not planned to take part as he had modified his clay-court preparation. But, knowing his attachment to the tournament, we never lost hope that he would nevertheless be there this year; we have been proven right and are very proud.”
So what do you think, Fed fans? Is this a much needed tune-up or a big time mistake? Is Roger looking to build up his match confidence or did his sponsor Rolex throw a tantrum?
If his back is okay, I’m all for it. I just hope he is healthy.
Thanks to GTT reader Eve for sending me the tip!

This is great news — it means that he wants to play tennis and is determined to get his game primed – for that 14th slam. Roger isn’s a slacker, he just needs to get out there and play — and he knows it. Go Roger !!
I agree, Denise! And I think “play” is the operative word. Roger needs to have some fun on the court.
He needs to keep up with the competition and put some pressure on Rafa too. I think it’s a good idea.
Yup very happy he’s there. You know Roger, when they say it’s not compulsory, they don’t REALLY mean it.
Glad he’s seen the light. The clay season schedule is not as demanding this year, and he clearly needs more match practice to get back into the groove again.
I think this smart for a few reasons, mentioned by previous commenters. If you lose to El Rey Del Clay it’s no harm, no foul. And he and Mirka can speed down the Corniche, the wind in their fabulous hair, like Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in “To Catch a Thief.”
And Roger and Rafa both drive Aston Martins – maybe they could bring them and have a drag race on the Corniche?
Honestly, it might do the both of them a world of good. I think they’re both a little burnt out. The ATP should change one tournament to a drag racing/dance off competition.
Or they should look to Serena, who seems to squeeze every ounce of fab and fun from whatever comes her way. There’s tennis, then there’s life.
Dance offs are the, er, shizzle. Everybody get down tonight. Your hamstrings might thank you.
Year, it´s a good idea. He needs to get out on the court, but the idea of him staying home and working with a coach also kind of exited me. Lets hope he shows up with one.
Hi Mark – I also wondered if Roger might be getting a coach right now. Maybe he did and wants to test him out in MC? That would be exciting, for sure!
Year. That was exatly my thought. It could be so good. He needs someone to pump some confidence into him again because we know he has the game in him to be the best, but he is right know down mental.
But who should it be? I am not so sure Mac is the right one for the job even though he maybe better than no one at all. I really was happy when he was working with Cahill, but lets face it, it is never gonna happen.
Good for Him!!!That’s the true spirit of a great champion!Win or Lose Roger, i am with you all the way!I am so proud of you.
go roger!!!
