If Roger Federer’s racquet smashing episode during his semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic in Miami was an understandable outburst of frustration, his post-match press conference is like catching someone in a bar about ten minutes after he’s been fired – bitter, despairing and waiting for the whiskey to soak in.
I think it’s necessary viewing, if you haven’t seen it yet:
And I thought it was hard to read in print. . .

In the beginning of the clip was he crying? Or was he wiping tears under his eyes?
WTH , amazing, he doesn’t need a coach but a pshycologist
Could be sweat, could be tears – but the huskiness in his voice shows hes’ pretty wrecked by emotion.
He’s taking it so hard, it makes me wonder if something else is bothering him. . .don’t know what that would be, but he seems WRECKED.
He could use a session or two on a couch, for sure.
That was so dark, so full of negative emotion and sarcasm. Did he do it right after the match? (He’s still sweating, so maybe he hadn’t even taken a shower.) I’m really hoping this is the jolt he needs to do some reassessment. Thanks for posting it, freakyfrites.
i LOVE roger and i know that he is sooo crushed because he has no way of beating nadal, and i think taht he is losing hope…he NEEDS a coach!! once he gets a coach and gets some more structure, i think he will do alot better. he is the greatest player ever you know?
Wow, this is hard to watch. The bit where he turns away and snaps, “Yes, it’s gonna stay that way” in response to the clay question is kind of shocking.
Is this the lowest he’s ever been in a presser? Post Wimbly he was obviously very depressed and it’s clear he had been crying, but even then there wasn’t this horrible prickliness about him. He’s like a different Roger
Hi y’all. I know! It’s scary! I even felt bad posting it – like Fed fans need more bad vibes right now.
But we have to look at the emotions, bad or good, as a promising thing. This guy CARES – which means he’s going to continue to work.
Also in the glass is half full category – making it to back to back semis isn’t too bad – and better than he’s done the past two years, right? (There was the mono last year and Canas in ‘07)
But Roger needs to get his confidence back. . .this insecurity and despair really is too tough to watch.
Oh, ouch. That is one seriously unhappy person. I know this was straight after the match so hopefully he’s been able to bounce back a bit and get some perspective since this was filmed. But still, I have never seen him like this before; his sarcasm was so negative, especially that bitter comment about no one expecting him to win and then the dig at the crowd at the end. He needs to find a way to stay positive, otherwise how can he go on like this? No one wants to keep on doing something that makes them so unhappy.
I know, Louise! We’ve all been there at various jobs, even ones we like. I’d say Roger needs a vacation, but he’s had quite a few breaks so far this season.
Maybe he needs a real break – kind of like Venus Williams took a couple years back. (I remember she had some mysterious, undisclosed injury that kept her out for a month or so.)
He must do something to mentally revitalize himself. Maybe he’ll take some time off to be a dad and that will help.
I would be sad if he wasn’t playing, though, so I better be careful what I wish for!
wow, that was so hard to watch! but, it offered such interesting insight into a complex man and athlete. I think he def. needs a few rounds with a therapist or a punching bag to get out the neg. vibes and clear the dark clouds. Maybe the birth of little roger will help–when is Mirka due?
Ooh, a punching bag! That would be awesome. Someone get this man some boxing gloves, stat.
Seriously, wouldn’t it be great if Roger took a break and did some combat training? Just to get those killer instincts back?
But he’d need to wear a lot of padding – don’t want any injuries.
At least he looked like he cared. Sometimes I wonder if he still does, about non-slam tournaments these days.
A few sessions on the couch would be nice, what would also be nice is if everyone who saw him in the next few months asked him what his name was. Roger. Freaking. Federer. He needs to remember it before he drops to No 3 or less this year.
Last bit of venting. Positive vibes from now on
You’d think with all the RF apparel he wears, that Roger wouldn’t need reminding. (Seriously, I bet his underpants are monogrammed.)
Maybe Nike should work on a new line: “Roger. Freaking. Federer”
I’d buy that tshirt!
Federers eyes were teary because of the windy conditions.
I don’t know. . .his voice seemed pretty shaky. when they asked about what tournaments he was playing, it sounded like he was about to lose it.
As he said, it’s good the hard court swing is over and he can take a little break. Too bad he’s not playing Monaco, but I think he needs the (mental) recovery time.
His emotions shows that he has a true passion for the game. Adding the functionallity to the HalfDialForms so that they stay together while they are resized.
“But we have to look at the emotions, bad or good, as a promising thing. This guy CARES ”
WORD!
And I read somewhere that Roger had been crying the locker room right after the loss (and before the presser).
