Serena Williams is the latest casualty to knee injury, joining fellow Olympic team mates Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams (both citing knee problems) on the sidelines of the East West Bank Classic. Svetlana Kuznetsova has also withdrawn with a leg injury, and Jelena Jankovic may not be far behind. It’s too bad that Serena won’t be playing in L.A. – I can say from experience that this is her home turf and that the fans come out in droves to see her play. But it will be a good thing, in the end, for the U.S.A.’s Olympic medal count. Serena’s taking gold in Beijing, no doubt about it! Let’s just hope Venus and Lindsay show up. It would be strange if Liezel was the only one.

Hey Freakyfrites! Yeah, the team is definitely hurting. I have to admit, I originally wasn’t a big fan of the Davenport comeback. It seemed like she had just been complaining for years about the grind of the tour, which was really starting to sound like a broken record. So when she stopped to have lil’ Jagger, I was glad because I wouldn’t have to listen to the complaints anymore! Then when she came back, I was like, “Oh no, here we go again.”
But she hasn’t had any gripes at all, and she really, REALLY wanted to be on the Olympic squad. She made it, and now I’m totally pulling for her to do well there. I hope her body holds up so she can reach her goal.
I agree – Lindsay was so down on tennis before she retired that I just wanted her to shut up and LEAVE (which she did.) And I viewed her quick comeback as vindication, in a way, for the sport that she seemed to despise so much just a few months earlier.
I think Lindsay will be done for good after the Olympics – maybe the Open, if her body can take it.
