It was an amazing match. It was so close and so hard fought that it almost, almost doesn’t matter to me that Roger lost. It was nearly over in straights, which would have made me throw myself over the balcony (don’t worry, I’d land in the bushes), but Roger showed huge heart and pulled himself back from the brink of defeat. But Rafa’s the better player right now – the unofficial No. 1 player in the world – and he obviously deserved to win it in the end. And he was so humble in his victory – saying that Roger is still the best, still the No. 1, even though he keeps beating him on all the big occasions. If Roger has to lose, he can’t lose to a more worthy opponent than the wonderful Rafael Nadal.
But how surreal to see Roger with the little plate and Rafa with the trophy.
“It HURTS!” Roger admitted to John McEnroe after the match. He had tears in his eyes and rushed out of the room. Yes, Roger, it does! That was the hardest thing to watch – oh, oh, I’m starting to feel depressed!
My husband made me feel better, though. He told me that Roger will definitely win at Wimbledon again! He’s my Mirka, unconditionally supportive of my Roger obsession!
But enough moping! Because truly, it’s matches like this that remind us why we LOVE this game. (And Roger! And Rafa!) What did Roger’s practice t-shirt say, again?
Pain is temporary, but tennis fans are forever!
GO ROGER!

It does hurt! But because of the way the match was played, I can stand the pain. If Roger had lost in three, that would have really been a bad feeling. I was really disappointed after the French Open, but not so much for this Wimbledon final which was truly a great match. Of course it probably hurts more for Roger because it was so close, but like Roger said, Nadal deserved to win. Can you imagine how much more it would hurt if it was Djokovic?
Anyway, the year is not over … there is still the US Open not to mention there is next year. Keep the faith, freakyfrites. Mirka and Mrs. Federer are my inspiration. Just watching them in the players box helped keep me calm and reassured.
Go Roger!
Thanks, Alista! I feel better already.
I’m thinking that Roger and Rafa have still proven to be the best two players in the world (maybe in history) and Roger has to take something from that.
Rafa will make Roger better, for sure.
Djokovic is not worthy – I think talk of a “trivalry” is over for now.
What peaves me is that Borg is probably SOO happy that Roger didnt break his record…arghhh…damn that Bjorn Borg..egomaniac
Roger is still the better player to watch.
gee i hope roger comes back from this better than ever. Using this loss as inspiration as a stage in his carrer where he can build on, he will never want to feel this pain again, and he wont. I love roger, i want him to always win, watching him lose the other night hurts so much, but i no, he is a champion and champions never lay down, he will win the US Open, and then the mighty Grand Slam, he will beat nadal at his home, an then at tennis’s home… Wimbledon 09.
09 will be the year where Roger puts to rest the split views on who is the best.
And he will be once and for all, labeled the greatest tennis player ever to have played the game
Hi Daniel,
Oh my goodness, I hope you’re right! Seriously, who knew he could feel so much pain? It really put his French Open losses into perspective – this was like nothing he’d ever felt or experienced before.
I guess this is a mighty test, for a mighty player to overcome. He’s worthy, I think.
yeah i hope im right to, but he will…..
the day after i thought i was taking the loss worse than he was (even tho i new i wasnt) but yeah i was real unhappy n stuff. I just want to meet roger an show how much i like him as a person and tennis player.
but hearing about how upset he was, im sure he will play on and will never want to have those feelings again until the day comes when he has to retire, which i hope wont be for another 10years
